FIBREE Blockchain Challenge 2024
Welcome to the FIBREE Blockchain Challenge 2024, a competition aimed at addressing industry complexities through academic research and leveraging the potential of blockchain technology. This challenge provides an opportunity for industry professionals to collaborate with researchers at Cardiff University, Bahrain University, Aalto University, Western Sydney University, and many more to explore and propose the most innovative solutions for the application of blockchain technology in the built environment.
Context
Blockchain technology has revolutionised various sectors beyond its initial association with cryptocurrencies. While it gained prominence as the foundation for digital currencies like Bitcoin, the capabilities of blockchain extend far beyond financial transactions. In recent years, blockchain has emerged as a transformative tool within the built environment, offering innovative solutions to address industry challenges and improve efficiency.
As the world continues to explore the benefits of blockchain technology, its potential in the built environment becomes increasingly apparent. From streamlining asset management and transactions to enhancing trust in financial services and improving supply chain management, blockchain offers innovative solutions to address industry challenges. Competition Process
1. Challenge Submission: Industry professionals are invited to submit their blockchain-related challenges to FIBREE. These challenges should focus on addressing issues within the built environment and have the potential to benefit from blockchain technology.
2. Academic Board Review: The FIBREE Academic Board will review all submissions and select the most promising challenges based on their relevance, innovation, and potential impact. The selected challenges will be forwarded to all participating University for students to explore.
3. Challenge Assignment: Universities participating in the competition will receive the selected challenges from the Academic Board. Students interested in participating will have the opportunity to choose a challenge and begin their research.
4. Dissertation Development: Once a student selects a challenge, he/she will work on developing a comprehensive dissertation that addresses the problem statement. The student will conduct research, analyse relevant literature, propose innovative solutions, and perform any necessary experiments or simulations. The challenge proposer will have the opportunity to participate in the dissertation development process, offering ideas, providing guidance, and sharing industry insights.
5. Dissertation Evaluation: Upon completion, the student's dissertation will be evaluated by a panel of experts, including academic advisors and industry professionals. The evaluation criteria will include the clarity of problem definition, depth of research, quality of proposed solutions, and potential impact on the built environment.
6. Publication: Successful dissertations, meeting the evaluation criteria, will be published in the next edition of the Industry Report. This publication will provide recognition to the relevant industry professionals and students for their valuable contributions to the industry and academia.
Submission Details
Industry professionals are encouraged to submit their challenges through the following channels: ask@fibree.org. Challenges should include a clear problem statement, relevant background information, and any specific requirements or considerations.
Prizes:
The winning challenge proposer and the successful students will have their Dissertation published in the next industry Report, receive 2-year free access to FIBREE and be presented with a certificate at FIBREE.

Timeline:
1. Challenge Submission Deadline: November 2023
2. Academic Board Review: December 2023
3. Challenge Assignment to Universities: Complete before 19th January 2024, then February developing Live Project ideas and establishing connections with companies. The deadline for live project proposal submissions at the end of February.
4. Dissertation Development: June-August 2024
5. Dissertation Evaluation: September – October 2024
6. Publication in Industry Report: June 2025
